3) The Li Jih Hwa (NAO) Interview
Interview conducted on the
12th October 1998
by Steve Jones.

When did you first get into emulation?
The first emulator I had played(and I still seldom played with it) was Massage. But it was not until the summer of 1997, when I met with Thierry's System16 emulator had I entered the scene of emulator creation.

What emulators do you use on a regular basis and what's your favorite (excluding your own)?
No, but I like Genecyst and Massage and Magic Engine a lot.

And what game(s) do you spend most time playing?
Not specically. I used to play adventure games before, King's Quest series and Monkey Islands series were my favorites. But I hardly find enough time to finish through one game. I also liked arcade shooting games(but acturally I enjoyed watching other's play more than my own play).

What system/game would you like to see emulated in the near future, and do you have any plans to emulate it yourself?
Sure for the NAMCO System86 and System2 games. Also for the KONAMI shooting games. Well :), if you meant which ones do I like most, I would say I like NAMCO games.

M72 took a lot of people by surprise (myself included) as there was no build up to it's release. Was it difficult to keep the project secret and was that intentional?
Well, at first I got an idea to improve RAGE's IREM game emulation. But later I made up my mind to write another one. The first version of M72 emulator was done in a very short time. I started to work on one Friday night, and before the sun of next Sunday rose, the first supported game: R-TYPE was running on my desktop(still no sounds then). Two weeks later, 0.20b was released from Thierry's page. So how did you think that I had kept it secret? :) I got a lot of helps from others, especially from Chris Hardy(Juno1st fame). He was really nice to provide many many useful informations.

What are your future (long term) development plans for M72?
Of course to add more games, I plan to emulate all IREM games from '87 to '92. A nice GUI will be the next target.

I also asked Nao when the next version of M72 would be released.
He didn't answer the question but went one better and actually released a new version.
You can get a copy of M72 by clicking on the link below.

I'd like to thank Nao for taking the time out to do this interview with me.
